Olympic gold medalist Matthias Steiner on hand to unveil new fitness facilities at two Chicago Public Schools
SCHILLER PARK, Ill., March 10, 2009 – Life Fitness, in partnership with World Sport Chicago, today announced it is updating the fitness facilities at two Chicago public schools. Competing in the Olympic or Paralympic Games is an age-old dream of children and adults alike, and as the City of Chicago sets its sights on hosting the 2016 Olympic and Paralympic Games, World Sport Chicago and Life Fitness are building a series of training centers for students in Chicago that will enable them to work towards their athletic dreams.
"As part of Chicago's bid for the 2016 Olympic and Paralympic Games, Chicago 2016 formed World Sport Chicago to help expose youth to a wider variety of sporting activities," said William Scherr, chairman of World Sport Chicago. "Our mission is to introduce youth to the fun and benefits of sport, and we thank Life Fitness for making this a reality today in two Chicago schools."
The redesigned and updated fitness rooms in Chicago's North Grand High School and Lindblom Math & Science Academy will provide youth in these neighborhoods with the opportunity to work out in leading training facilities.
"Increasing awareness in our young people about the importance of fitness and leading an active life is a priority for us," said John Stransky, president of Life Fitness. "We are honored to be able to work with World Sport Chicago to help us spread this message and give back to the community."
Each of the schools received more than $35,000 worth of cardio and strength-training equipment as well as on-site education and training support from Life Fitness. Life Fitness Academy, the training education arm of Life Fitness, is providing a ten-week fitness and nutrition program, working alongside staff and students to assist in training.
Olympian and gold medalist Matthias Steiner attended the unveiling today at Lindblom Math and Science Academy on Chicago's Southside. Steiner is an Olympic gold medalist in weightlifting, having competed for Germany in the 2008 Games in Beijing. He also competed at the 2004 Olympic Games in Athens, representing his native Austria. Steiner received German citizenship after marrying a German woman.
Today's efforts are part of a larger program sponsored by World Sport Chicago; the organization will host the 2009 Pan American Weightlifting Championships in June, along with weightlifting clinics for youth and coaches held throughout the summer.
